Sturgeon's ex husband and onetime chief exec of the SNP whilst she was its leader sits in prison at the moment awaiting sentencing, for around £400,000 of fraud/theft of party funds. From the trial, and the many pages of items it listed that he had charged on expenses without authorisation, it sounds like he was a shopaholic. She says she didn't known.

Time will tell whether shes telling the truth, and people believe her.

Lets take a step back - could she have known. They shared a Glasgow home, but didnt operate joint bank accounts/finances. That's not unusual. Lets put his thefts in perspective. He probably earned around £100,000 per year - ballpark - given the nature of his job. That means after tax etc he'd have around £50-60,000. Take mortgage from that (Im assuming he had a share with her in one), and maybe he had around £40,000 per year disposable income. His crime appears to have been over around 12-13 years, making it worth around £40,000 per year. In other words he was living a lifestyle about twice that of his actual means. Could she have known, comparing his ability to freely spend versus her own, assuming - say - he was paying his own share of bills from his real income, leaving the shopaholic side for luxuries etc.

Looking at some other possibilities tho, it could be that buying his luxuries/toys on the stolen income freed up his proper income to let him pay more of the bills - from electricity to council tax to the weekly shopping. It might be she benefited - and could have seen in this way.

There's also the issue of Bute House, her official residence in Edinburgh for much of this time. Did that mean she was just at home less to see what he was doing?

Finally, some wags have suggested he was keeping a second home, such was the prolific nature of his spending. There's no official mention of that - bar the motor home.

It does seem like eyebrows can reasonably be raised at her assertions of not even suspecting.
