sharing without hosting

Again, I'm tech-illiterate so keep that in mind. I'm also not a lawyer!

But it sounds like a platform can share stuff that takes up a lot of storage space (stuff like video) without actually hosting it. (I mean, I guess we do that all the time via hot-linking? Is that still a term people use?)

In the linked post, bluvy.app talks about sharing/posting/featuring video on Bluevy but the actual videos are stored elsewhere (Bluesky is storing them???) and then using a bunch of moderation tools to keep out the porn.

But could this go the other way? Could Platform A share/publish/surface a bunch of NSFW pngs and mp4s but because it's not actually stored there, it's actually stored on Platform B, that means Platform A doesn't get in trouble with the law and/or PayPal? Again, not a lawyer. But if you are, or know one, or can answer any of these questions, please do!
