Stann, Fighter + Warrior Of Mercy Monk
Backstory
So Dann is dead. Long live Dann! Now I had to figure out a new character to take his place in the campaign.
I decided to go with family. Since Dann was born to orcish parents and shunned (then later sold away) because he came out a tiefling, I figured why not a brother. An older brother, 10 years older, who saw his family sell Dann. A brother who had his own shame - born sickly and weak for an orc. His father gave him an Amulet Of Health when he was young and told him to hide it and hide his true sickly nature.
After seeing his family sell Dann off because he wasn't "right", and how he was treated for not being "right", he left his clan and joined some monks and druids who lived in the forest. he learned not just to fight (and he can FIGHT) but to heal.
Eventually, he decided he needed to find his brother Dann. He needed to make a connection to family that neither of them really ever got. He sets off on his search, and just as he closes in .. Dann dies. But Stann doesn't know that yet...
Build/Strategy
So I love monks. Love 'em, glass cannon aspects and everything. So I definitely wanted to build yet another monk. But I wanted get have more fun with this one and try multiclassing. The DM is also allowing me to take a "remastered" version of the Dual Wielder feat that one of the other party members has as well - the key to it that any weapon not tagged explicitly as two-handed or heavy can be treated as light.
We're playing a campaign that gives an extra Feat at level 4 as well. Took Tough and I have that Amulet Of Health. So I'm rolling in with a monk that has 158 HP.
Fighter (1)
That one level of fighter is the key. It gives me proficiency with martial weapons, a fighting style, and 3 weapon masteries.
- Fighting Style: Two-Weapon Fighting
- Weapon Masteries: Dagger (Nick), Quarterstaff (Topple), Handaxe (Vex)
- These are all also classified as Monk Weapons since they are either Simple Melee or Martial Melee with the Light property
Monk (13)
Going with the Warrior Of Mercy subclass because the party needs a little healing and that can help. Other key bits to this build:
- Level 8 take the remastered Dual Wielder feat
- Level 12 take Inspiring Leader feat
With the combo of Two Weapon Fighting, Weapon Masteries, and Remastered Dual Wielder I have a combo of attacks that can potentially leave an enemy Prone, Stunned, and Poisoned.
- Attack 1 (Strike 1): Attack with Quarterstaff and if it hits the creature targeted has to do a CON save (DC 18) or be Prone.
- Attack 2 (Strike 2): Attack with Dagger. Use 1 Focus Point to enact Stunning Strike (DC 18 CON save, unless I get to buy a Dragonhide Belt which could boost it) which could leave the target Stunned.
- Attack 2 (Strike 3): Due to Nick from the Dagger and the Remastered Dual Wielder feat allowing the Quarterstaff to be treated as light, I can then do a follow up attack with my Quarterstaff. If the targeted saved on the initial Topple check, can try it again.
- Bonus Action Flurry Of Blows (Strikes 4, 5, 6): Use 1 Focus Point to do Flurry of Blows.
- At Stann's monk level, he has Hand Of Harm and Physician's Touch and can apply Hand Of Harm without using another Focus Point during a Flurry Of Blows. Physician's Touch makes it so that Hand Of Harm adds the Poisoned condition to the target (without a save!) until the end of my next turn
So basically I have two chances to make the target Prone with a DC 18 CON save, one chance to make them Stunned with a DC 18 (at least) CON save, and an automatic Poisoned condition with no save if any of my Flurry Of Blows hits.
This will be great against regular enemies but also fantastic against enemies with Legendary Resistances. There will be up to 3 chances for the target to burn legendary resistances in one turn and then I can make them Poisoned without a save so they can't even use a legendary resistance on that.
I can't wait to use that combo and see it work. That's gonna be so much fun.
Alas, Stann can't join them for two more weeks because we took this week off and I am skipping next week due to a family obligation. But that's good, gives the rest of the party time to mourn Dann and Stann to come in fresh.
